WHAT MEDITATION IS & HOW IT CAN HELP YOU

 

Meditation takes us on a journey inwards where we can uncover our true Self. When we meditate we take time for quiet reflection and silence, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. This enables us to come back to a centred place of being where we can refresh and restore our spiritual, mental and emotional energies.

When we meditate we take care of the Soul.  When we don’t feel grounded, we can experience being pushed and pulled in many different directions.  We can then feel overwhelmed and stressed.  In time this leads to illness and disease because our mental, emotional and physical health is thrown out of balance. 

Inner peace and happiness naturally arise when the mind is able to focus on positive and uplifting thoughts.  Movement of the mind slows down.  An inner stillness and feeling of being 'in control' develop again.  If we meditate on a regular basis confidence and dignity are restored. This gives us strength to cope better with the busyness and difficulties in life.

RAJA YOGA MEDITATION

 

The meaning of the word Yoga is union, connection or relationship. It is derived from the Sanskrit root 'yuj', pronounced 'yug' which means to join or to unite.  Raja or Raj mean king, ruler, emperor, sovereign or royalty.  In the context of meditation, raja means the highest.  So, Raja Yoga meditation is about (1) uniting with the highest Self - i.e. your original Self, and (2) uniting with the highest of all other things in life - other people, nature and The Divine.

Raja Yoga meditation is practised with open eyes, therefore it can be practised anywhere, at any time.   It is a meditation without rituals or mantras.  It doesn't require you to sit in any postures, and it's simple and easy to practice.

Who are We?

 

The Brahma Kumaris is a non-sectarian, non-governmental organisation. We welcome people from all walks of life, religion, race or creed. Through meditation, we seek to help people rediscover the goodness they have within and encourage the development of spiritual awareness, attitude and behaviour.

Brahma Kumaris meditation courses and self-development programs are offered in over 8,000 Centres across 130 countries.  The spiritual headquarters, the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (BKWSU), is in Mt Abu, Rajasthan, India.  Established in 1937, the BKWSU was inspired by the vision of a world in which all individuals have developed their potential and live in harmony with each other and the environment. The University works to promote peace at all levels; through personal development, local and national initiatives and international projects.  

As a non-governmental organisation, the BKWSU is affiliated wth the United Nations.  It has ...

  • General Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
  • Associate Status with the Department of Public Information (DPI).
  • Consultative Status with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
  • Observer status to the United Nations Environment Assembly of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

It is also an Observer Organisation to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and a Flagship Member of Education for Rural People (ERP), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Our centres are run by people who practice the philosophy and lifestyle that they teach and they volunteer their time and resources to help their communities develop and sustain peaceful and happy lifestyles.

In accordance with the principles of the BKWSU, we believe a price tag cannot be attached to the spiritual dimension of life, therefore we don't charge any fees for the facilitation of any of our courses, classes, workshops, retreats, etc.   Ongoing operations of our Centre are funded through donations from regular students and the public.  Voluntary contributions are most welcome.

On the Gold Coast we are at 27 Bordeaux Parade (near Le Mans Drive) in Mermaid Waters.  There is street parking around the Centre and we're also a 10 minute walk through the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre from the Broadbeach South tram and bus station.

Our Meditation Sessions

 

We hold a number of meditation sessions during the week.  Whether you're an experienced meditator or a beginner, you are welcome.  All sessions are held at our Centre unless it states otherwise.  

The method of meditating is simple :

  • stop, breath and relax
  • let go of all thoughts of the world completely
  • turn your attention to your inner world
  • focus on the point of energy - the Soul - in the centre of your forehead, above and behind your eyes
  • remember your original state of being is Peace - start creating thoughts like "I am a being of Peace" ... "I am peaceful" ...
  • retain this focus - on the Soul in the centre of your forehead, and your original state of Peace, Love, Purity etc ...
  • every time your mind wanders away, bring your attention back to these two things - the Soul and your original state of being

You will find that the more you are able to keep your mind focused on positive and uplifting thoughts, and less on negative and unnecessary thoughts, you will begin to feel more peaceful, happier and have more energy.

When you arrive at the Centre, please enter quietly and leave your shoes in the foyer.  You will find cool filtered water here.  Entry to the Meditation Room is up the first two steps.  Please register your attendance in the book at the back of the room and take a seat where you feel comfortable. The bathroom is up the stairs, turn right and then the first on the left.

The Mind can be filled with a lot of waste or useless thoughts.  It is these types of thoughts that drain us of our peace and energy, and therefore our happiness.  In these meditation sessions you will be gently guided through a series of mental exercises that will enhance and develop centredness, connection with self, inner strength and calmness.  You will learn how to focus your mind on positive, constructive thoughts that will empower you.

Coming to the end of a weekend and the beginning of another week can be daunting.  Sunday Meditation is an opportunity for you to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for the new week ahead.  Take some quiet time to connect with and centre yourself, and build and sustain inner calm and resilience.  You will be guided in your meditation with commentaries, soft music and silence.

World Peace Hour - a global meditation for world peacE

World Peace Hour is a synchronized meditation with participants in over 130 countries.  It is an hour dedicated to creating peace for the self and sending peace to the world.  You will be guided to focus and experience peace and calm with meditation commentaries, soft music and silence.

OUR MEDITATION COURSES

 

We have two courses in meditation - an Introductory Course and an Intermediate Course which follows on from the Introductory Course.

These Courses explain in detail the method and philosophy behind Raja Yoga Meditation.  There are 5 lessons in each course and each lesson is 90 minutes long, broken up into three key messages.  Meditation is practised at the beginning and end of the lessons and in between each key message.

The Courses are designed to be interactive and we encourage questions and discussion so the learning experience is rich and fulfilling for everyone.

If you are not sure if you're ready for a meditation practice, or you meditate already and would like to enhance your practice or your life in general, you may find that the talks, classes and workshops that we hold on various topics each week are of benefit to you. 

We look at a variety of topics like understanding the workings of the mind, gaining greater clarity and learning how to manage your thoughts, overcoming overthinking, overcoming anger, developing inner peace and inner power, etc.

All sessions are held at our Centre unless otherwise advised.

For anyone wanting to bring about transformation in their life, one of the most supportive and renewing decisions you can make is to participate in a spiritual retreat.

Brahma Kumaris Australia is fortunate enough to be the custodian of three beautiful retreat and study venues - two in NSW and one in Victoria.  In Queensland we hire a special facility in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

Dedicated volunteer practitioners of Raja Yoga Meditation share their life experiences and wisdom in retreat sessions. Daily meditation routines contribute to the learning atmosphere. Our culture of meditation creates a pure atmosphere that enables you to experience inner peace and a reconnection with your Self.  We appreciate your support for this subtle focus on being positive and reflective during your stay.

You will find that nature does her work too, offering a stress-free environment.  All meals are wholesome vegetarian choices cooked with love, and the entire grounds are also smoking-free zones.

 

 

THE HINTERLAND (QLD) ...

Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland is home to a beautiful retreat centre which we use for retreats 3-4 times a year. This ideal learning and meditation environment is surrounded by lush native bushland with panoramic scenic views close by. The venue’s vegetarian kitchen sits alongside comfortable single and twin share rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Located 30 minutes inland from Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast, this venue is accessible by car. There is no public transport.
